Jay Mabrey: I didn’t know much about them at the time and chose to incorporate the CCC “Birdman” into the design. The font for the Grateful Dead was my own design and hand-drawn. All of the work was done on a light table using frisket, press-type, and rapidograph pens. I had to do the color separations by hand and ended up drawing four separate layers that had to line up perfectly. It took me 24 hours of work – and all on one weekend. I actually ran out of press-type for doing the ticket outlets and had to fake the letters by hand. If you look really close, you can see where some of the hand drawn parts smeared a bit. Today, I could do the same poster on Adobe Illustrator in far less time. Compared to most of the other Dead posters, mine is rather plain – but I do appreciate that it represents what many fans consider to be one of the best Grateful Dead concerts of all time.
