This undated advertisement mock-up was prepared in case The Grateful Dead did not sell out before May 8, 1977. Records suggest that it was never printed.
It contains Jim Marshall’s 1976 photograph of the band, reproduced in Phil Lesh’s autobiography, “Searching for the Sound: My Life with the Grateful Dead.” (Lesh captions the image: “Not enough sleep: Mickey Hart, Phil, Donna, Jerry, Bob, Bill, Keith in front.”)
Though the authenticity of the advert is uncertain, the list of record stores is one of many factual errors. A Cornell Concert Commission Press Release authenticated and dated April 7, 1977 states that on Tuesday, April 11, tickets were available at nine locations: the three Cornell Unions, Cortland’s Corey Union, and four record stores, “Geneva’s Christianson Music, Johnson City’s Hi-Fi Records, Ithaca’s Tapes and Discount Records, and both branches of Record People.” Sources suggest that Bach to Rock Records and Record Town did not offer tickets to the Barton Hall ‘77 show.
Also, Ithaca is misspelled “Ithica.”

Johnson City Hi-Fi! That’s where I bought my first bootleg – a vinyl LP with a bunch of stuff recorded at the also famous 1970 Harpur College show.
