(My first time actually visiting Ithaca Post and I like what I see!)

I like seeing a John Prine every couple of years. For many years Prine’s show has generally changed very little (that I have ever noticed) yet it is always a good experience. For this show I almost did not go because we had just seen Prine in Albany 2 months ago. I simply could not accept NOT going as Prine played down the street to our friends and neighbors in our community theater. So I went.

I’m glad I did go! Sara Watkins added to the show for sure. I liked her solo set a lot but when she joined John and the boys on stage her presence really added to the show. “In Spite Of Ourselves” was fantastic and I dare say even gave Iris a run for the money! :) Also, I have never heard Prine sing “Late John Garfield Blues” live. That was a treat! Sara singing the part of verse 2 “Midnight fell on Franklin Street…” was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard in the State Theater. (Up until this, the most beautiful thing I had heard in the State were the vocal tones of Gillian Welch).

We are very fortunate to have DSP bringing such top-rate talent to our quirky little town. Without the work of Dan Smalls the theater would be just a building on State Street. Keep it coming Dan!
